Blog

This is a blog post. There might be more to come, so stay posted! In the meantime, I’m almost always sharing my thoughts on twitter.

Pitch Wars Wishlist

What is Pitch Wars?

Pitch Wars is a mentoring program where published/agented authors or publishing professionals choose a writer to work with for three months to revise their manuscript. It ends in February with an Agent Showcase, where agents can read a pitch + first page and can request to read more.

Who are we?

Welcome to our Pitch Wars wishlist! We’re Em X. Liu and Grace D. Li, co-mentors and longtime critique partners (and friends!). We’re mentoring YA/NA this year. Read a little bit more about us and what we’re looking for below:

Em: Hello! I’m a Chinese Canadian author who moonlights as a medical student. This is my first year mentoring for Pitch Wars and I’m so excited to dive in! You can find me on Twitter @emdashliu

Grace: Hi! I’m a Chinese American author who grew up in the suburbs of Houston, TX. Like Em, I’m a medical student by day and a writer by night, and my debut novel, PORTRAIT OF A THIEF, comes out April 2022. It follows five college students as they steal back looted Chinese art from Western museums, and is about diaspora, art as power, and what history leaves out. I mentored in Pitch Wars last year (check out my mentee Sarah Underwood, who writes gorgeous sapphic fantasy and is also mentoring this year!) and I’m so excited to be back. You can find me on social media @gracedli!

Why should you submit to us?

We’ve been friends & critique partners for years now, so we know each other’s process inside out at this point! We are also each other’s biggest cheerleaders, so working with us will mean lots of encouragement and support! Em has previously been an AMM mentee, so in particular they totally understand some of the pressures of participating in a mentorship program & we’re both super open to any specific kind of support that our mentee wants.

We have both lots of experience with massive rehauls and revisions (we’ve both rewritten projects top down before, including things as big as POV changes!), so we’re not afraid to really dig in during the revision phase. But that also means that we’re super empathetic to how difficult revision can be, and are ready to walk you through anything that seems too daunting. Above all, we approach Pitch Wars like a team, and that includes you!

In terms of communication, we’re pretty flexible. We’ll set up a groupchat on a platform that works for all three of us, and we’re open to video calls if needed to really talk a thing through! Even beyond the agent showcase, we hope that you’ll stay in touch; we’re here to support you for the entire publishing journey!

Thanks for reading Part I of our wishlist! For Part II, including what we’re looking for, our favorite recent reads, and what isn’t the best fit, please visit Grace’s website here: www.gracedli.com/pitchwars
